Description

The major difference dividing the nation was slavery.  If you recall, The North opposed slavery while the South favored slavery.  Due to the economic differences, Northern states quickly abolished slavery after the Revolutionary War while Southern states continued to rely on slave labor.

As the country expanded westward, the debate over slavery became stronger.  Southerners wanted to be able to move west and bring their slaves with them.  Northerners wanted to stop the spread of slavery. You may remember that Abolitionists in the North worked to end slavery forever.
